The Marilyn Sternglass Awards in Language and Literacy (Overall Merit Award)

Presented to a matriculated Language and Literacy MA student who enrolled in courses in either Fall 2024 or Spring 2025 or in both semesters.

The following is required for submission to be considered for the award.

  1. an application letter (addressed to Ms. Yana Joseph, Administrative Manager, English
    Department, City College of New York) stating the student’s name, contact information and
    intention to apply for the Marilyn Sternglass Overall Merit Award;
  2. a current CV with updated information about education, employment, publications,
    conference presentations, grants, scholarships, awards, and professional community service;
  3. an up-to-date CCNY graduate transcript;
  4. an essay or a research report submitted for credit in an L&L MA graduate course (without
    instructor’s comments or grade and minor copyediting only);
  5. a personal essay (500-750 words) in which the applicant discusses any/all of the following
    topics:
  • academic achievements as an L&L MA student (number of courses completed, GPA, awards);
  • professional and academic goals (as a graduate student & as a future graduate);
  • professional activities while enrolled in L&L MA (e.g., attending professional workshops and
    webinars, attending professional conferences);
  • professional accomplishments (e.g., awards, grants, scholarships, professional conference
    presentations, publications, invited talks);
  • professional community service/volunteer work related to graduate studies (e.g., reviewing
    manuscripts submitted for a journal, attending and speaking at MA in L&L new student orientations
    and recruitment events, volunteer tutoring for City Tutors, Literacy Partners, a public library, or
    another organization);
  • professional employment related to being a graduate student in the MA in Language and Literacy
    (e.g., writing center tutor, adjunct instructor, CUNY Start Writing Assistant).
