Walter J Levison Scholarship
*Walter Levison was born in NYC in 1918 and graduated from Townsend Harris High School at the height of the Depression. He majored in physics at CCNY because he couldn’t afford the $2 lab fee required at that time for an engineering major. He graduated in 1939 and went on, after the war, to become the designer of the first camera ever to take photographs in space and, later, to found a successful venture capital firm in Boston. *
The recipient of this scholarship should be a resident of NYC who is motivated and ambitious, who achieved A’s and B’s in high school, and who—in the view of those awarding the scholarship—understands the opportunities that a college education offers.
Given those parameters, financial need should be the driving factor in selecting the recipient. The scholarship can be for any program at the college. The scholarship should cover tuition, fees, books, and supplies. Upon the student’s graduation, or sooner in the event the recipient doesn’t complete the course of study, the scholarship will be awarded to another student. The scholarship is intended for a freshman and should be available throughout their course of study provided they remain in good academic standing.
